Thames Path
Length >60km
Max transport gap >20km
A walk of 440km between Greenwich and the river’s source.
The quoted distance includes both banks of the river between the Greenwich Foot Tunnel and Teddington Lock, with 95km for the north bank option and 97km for the south bank option, and 248km upstream of Teddington). Public transport connections (128 locations, 9 matrices) are plentiful east of Windsor, adequate between Windsor and Oxford, and more sparse (but still achievable) upstream from Oxford. The route between Oxford and the sea is easily accessible from anywhere in the Greater London conurbation, with Oxford and/or Swindon as an option to be a base station for points west.
Observations
Walkers should note the use of a ferry at Shepperton. Upstream walkers should consult the “bus-stop-style” timetable panel on the path after passing beneath Walton Bridge to determine whether the signed alternative through Shepperton needs to be used. Downstream walkers will find out whether the alternative is needed on arrival at the ferry terminal.
